Message from Air Force Leaders

Airmen & Guardians,

Memorial Day is one of our Nation’s most solemn occasions.  It serves as a chance to pause, reflect, and honor the women and men who gave the last full measure defending our Nation and our democratic ideals.

You may see someone wearing a Gold Star or Next of Kin lapel pin.  These buttons are reserved for family members whose loved one was lost while serving America.  At the same time, the Department of the Air Force and the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency continues to diligently work to bring home all 1,548 missing Airmen.  Each of these surviving relatives remain part of our Department of the Air Force family, forever.

Over this weekend, take a moment to pause and reflect on the sacrifices of those who have come before us.  Reflect on what it means to serve our Nation, and on the oath we took to defend the Constitution—that is our direct tie, our lineage, to the men and women who have given all.  For those who have lost a family member or close friend, know that the Department of the Air Force is committed to keeping their memory alive and honoring their sacred duty.  It is a privilege to serve alongside you.
